A fresh-air weekend in the South Island
Paddle a river in Ōtautahi, then point the car at the mountains. A two-day plan for people who’d rather be outside.
The South Island’s great trick is scale: you can paddle a city river in the morning and be under proper mountains by dinner. This plan starts flat and gets steeper.
Day one: Ōtautahi by water and hill
Christchurch is a city you can kayak through — the Ōtākaro Avon winds right past the centre. Operators run guided paddles year-round; going with one means local knowledge and no logistics.
In the afternoon, head for the Port Hills. The trail network above the city gives you harbour on one side, plains and Southern Alps on the other, and a decent excuse for a big dinner.
Day two: into the mountains
Tāhuna Queenstown wears the adventure-capital label loudly, but the quieter version is just as good: a morning on the trails or the lake, an afternoon watching weather move across the ranges. Book activities ahead in peak season — operators fill fast.
Trails, water and operators across the motu.
