What winter changes on the trails

Winter doesn’t close the trails; it re-prices them. The same track costs more daylight, more mud and more margin for error than it did in February — and pays out in empty car parks, sharp air and low golden light that makes every lookout twice as good.

The arithmetic

Daylight is the budget that matters. Count backwards from sunset, halve your summer ambitions, and start earlier than feels necessary. Low-level bush and coastal tracks are winter’s sweet spot; anything alpine is a different sport in July and deserves a different level of preparation, gear and forecast-checking entirely.
