The capital is small enough to walk and dense enough to fill a weekend twice over. Coffee, harbour, hills — in that order.
Wellington — Te Whanganui-a-Tara, the great harbour of Tara — is the rare capital city you can cross on foot in twenty minutes. That compactness is the whole point. Nothing is a trek, so the weekend becomes a chain of short walks between very good rooms.
Saturday: Cuba Street and the waterfront
Cuba Street is the city’s living room — buskers, bookshops, and a café density that borders on the competitive. Wellington takes coffee seriously enough that ordering badly is the only real way to embarrass yourself here.
Walk it off along the waterfront — the harbour loop earns you dinner. The city eats early and well; book ahead on weekends, or use the walk to scout a counter seat somewhere that doesn’t take bookings at all.
Sunday: up the hill, then one last pour
Take the cable car up for the view and walk back down through the botanic garden. If the southerly arrives — it will — find a warm room near the water and let the weather do its thing. Wellington on a wild day is arguably Wellington at its best.
