A long weekend in Tāmaki Makaurau

Two harbours, one isthmus and more neighbourhoods than you can eat through in three days. Here’s how locals would spend them.

Tāmaki Makaurau is a city built across an isthmus — the Waitematā on one side, the Manukau on the other, and nearly fifty volcanic cones in between. That geography is the trick to visiting well: pick a neighbourhood, walk it properly, and resist the urge to see everything. Three days is enough for three neighbourhoods done right.

Day one: the centre and Karangahape Road

Start on the waterfront and work uphill. Karangahape Road — K Road to everyone — has spent a century being the city’s most interesting street: independent shops, galleries, late-night kitchens and some of the best coffee in the country poured without ceremony. Take it slowly; the side streets reward detours.

That’s one of the espresso rooms from our index to start the morning with. Save it, review it if you go, and the next visitor gets a better map than you had.

Day two: the harbour’s edge

The Waitematā is the city’s front garden. Ferries run to islands and beaches most cities would build a tourism industry on; Aucklanders treat them like buses. Spend the afternoon along the harbour’s edge and stay out for the evening — the viaduct and wynyard quarters keep going well after the office towers empty.

Day three: go west, then rest

The west-coast beaches — black sand, heavy surf, cliffs draped in pōhutukawa — are under an hour from the CBD and feel like another country. Go early, swim between the flags, and be back in the city by mid-afternoon with salt still in your hair.

Pick a neighbourhood, walk it properly, and resist the urge to see everything.
