The two-hour tramp rule for beginners
Start smaller than your ambition. Two hours, told-someone, turned-around-on-time — the habits that make trampers out of walkers.
The way into tramping is not a big mission — it’s a two-hour track done properly. Long enough to feel like the real thing, short enough that a mistake is a story instead of a problem. Do five of those and the longer tracks stop being intimidating.
The non-negotiables
Even on a short track: tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back, check the forecast the morning of, carry water, a layer and your phone, and turn around at your turnaround time whether or not you’ve reached the thing. The hills reward people who treat small walks seriously.
