Rotorua announces itself before you arrive — the geothermal air is famous for a reason — and most visitors see it through a windscreen on the way between attractions. The city rewards staying still: lakefront walks, redwood forest on the town’s edge, and a Māori cultural life that is a living present tense, not a museum exhibit.

The mistake is cramming. Pick one anchor — a forest ride, a lake morning, an evening of kai and culture — and let the rest of the day happen around it.
And leave an hour for the second-hand shops — a town this visited accumulates interesting things, and the locals know where they surface.
